Hello Everyone!
It was yesterday night (Friday 1/23/2015) from 7-10pm, when we participated at the Asian Night Market event on library walk!! I personally had food  from many clubs and they were all amazing! But I would like to share with you guys some of  the preparation behind JSA’s and NSU’s food. Together we made “mitarashi dango”, which is a bit like skewered mochi grilled and topped off with a special sauce, and “Taiyaki”, which is a like a grilled pan cake with red bean paste inside it and is shaped like a fish.

The result was really amazing. Both the Mitarashi Dango and Taiyaki were sooo delicious that everybody loved them, and they both sold out. And here’s a behind the scene look on some of the prep that went into making the Mitarashi Dango:

First we made the batter, which was a mixture Rice Flour and Glutinuous Rice Flour and Water.

Work Party Dango Raw

After rolling the batter into many smaller balls, we had to boil it in hot water and once cooked, quickly dip it into cold water. We then skewered the 3 dango’s together.

Work Party Dango

Next we grilled the Dango’s.

ANM Grill Dango

Added out special sauce over it. And DONE!!

ANM Completed Dango

I was unable to participate in the preparation for the Taiyaki batter, and would LOVE  to do that next time. But I did get to see the cooking of it on the night itself! So here are the pictures of how they cooked it!

ASM Taiyaki 1

First he poured the batter onto the grill.

ASM Taiyaki 2

Then he added some Anko (Red Bean Paste) onto the batter

ANM Taiyaki 2

Added batter onto the other side.

ANM Taiyaki 3

Shut both sides tight!

ANM Taiyaki

and done!

I had a LOT of fun during the preparation  as well as the night of, where I pigged out on all of the good food at the Asian Night Market. Hope your night was as amazing as mine!

My first year with JSA

Hey everyone~~ This is Thao, JSA staff, posting a blog update for the first time so please bear with my sloppy writing XD

It’s been over a year since I became one of JSA staff members~ To be honest, it’s been a truly great time 🙂 Having been with JSA for all of my freshman year, JSA has become a vital part of my college life XD

Most of my time outside of classes and homework is spent on JSA. One of my non-JSA classmates used to be like “You’re going to an event/a meeting? Let me guess, JSA?” and he was always right lolll XD JSA gave me the chance to help with planning events and stuffs, which I find really fun to do, really. I haven’t done much work actually comparing to the senpai’s, but I love helping out whenever I can :3

Last Fall 2014 I was appointed JSA co-head of the Matsuri Advertisement committee (hope you all have heard of Matsuri, which is our annual festival in Spring :P). I honestly enjoy doing this job XD For the whole Thanksgiving break, Matsuri was the only thing on my mind. I also got to meet new people who signed up for the committee from both JSA and NSU. It’s a nice experience, and I’m looking forward to working with them as we get busier in Winter quarter 🙂 On a side note by the way, we’re looking for graphic designers, video editors, and volunteers who like drawing manga, so let me know if you would like to give it a try!

Random picture, random picture... yes it's related :3

Random picture, random picture… yes it’s related :3

// (I can already imagine Sho-kun be like “さすが Advertisement head” hahaha)

There’s one other thing about JSA that I find really interesting. I’m a Computer Engineering major, so among JSA people I hang out with the engineering folks quite a lot. Some people might have heard me say this a dozen times lol, but I’m so amazed by how many awesome engineering pros there are within JSA. They have helped me a lot, and they’re all senpai’s that I look up to and keep trying to catch up with, even though I know I’m still way too far behind 😛 Not only engineering people are awesome; lots of other people are really cool too. To name a few, there’s Sho-kun who’s so good at both writing (makes me go like “さすが Literature major!”) anddd designing (which is why I’m so glad he’s on my Matsuri team XD). There was also Erik, the previous Matsuri Coordinator; he did quite an impressive job and I’m trying to learn from the way he worked. Sometimes I get this feeling that everyone around me is an amazing person in one way or another, and I admire them a lot. That’s why I enjoy hanging with JSA people – they’re always friendly, welcoming, and super cool ^_^

Well, looks like I should end this lengthy monologue here 😛 If you have read this far, thank you XD There’s something I should have said earlier, but…. Happy New Year everyone! Hope you all have a wonderful year ahead, and see you around!

O Christmas Tree
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging;
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging;
Not only green when summer’s here,
But also when ’tis cold and drear.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging!

It’s finally Christmas season;
It’s also finals season;
It’s time for Geisel, day and night,
When morning comes, it matters not;
Make sure to bring your goodies!

It’s time to go iceskating!
It’s time for sweater season!
I hope you all, go ace them tests!
And when you do, let’s hope it’s right.
Good luck with studies! Fighting!

Cutting Corners

Hello everyone!

This is Sho popping in with a few thoughts~

Oh! And all of this will be written in English, so fear not! There’s no need for Google Translate. I’d suggest you grab a dictionary instead though. Hehe.

…just kidding…

Anyway! I initially had a different idea for my blog post, but a certain VP Internal beat me to it. So I guess I’ll have to change it up a bit… T_T (Things are about to get PERSONAL. In both senses of the word, really. I just hope I don’t bore you all. Please keep reading! lol)

We’ve just about finished up the 8th week of the quarter, and I imagine many of us are getting busier with gearing up for finals, starting up those term papers, and whatever else we have to do. As a Literature/Writing major, I’ve been super busy with readings, papers, and whatnot. And hey, I’m only human. I sometimes become lazy too. I cut corners. Y’know, the usual college student cram.

But enough of academics. On to JSA stuff! I first joined JSA near the later half of last year’s Fall quarter, and the people who have known me since then would probably agree that I was much, MUCH quieter than I am now. Here’s an example for purely illustrative purposes (or not):

Some time ago, a friend of mine asked me what my favorite holiday was. The question kind of caught me off guard, since that wasn’t something I really ever thought about before. But I don’t think about a lot of things, to be honest. Fast forward an awkwardly silent span of 10+ seconds later, and I decided to blurt out Thanksgiving. She shot me down though, saying that it wasn’t a “real” holiday. Yes. End conversation.

Hmmm… Looking back on it now, even I’m pretty surprised that I took any form of initiative in becoming one of JSA’s staff members. I mean, I was pretty content being with little to no company, keeping to myself in some corner of the room. (I’m not a creeper though, I promise!)

So! Tons of unexpected twists and turns! How is it that a bunch of you in JSA started calling me Shoママ? I’m at a loss too! Lmao

What I do know though, is that:

  1. Everyone in JSA was/is super welcoming, and made me willing to step out of my prior comfort-zone. So yeah, thanks y’all. Every single one of you is amazing!
  2. I’ve got a bit of a food obsession, and cooking experiments frequent my kitchen.
  3. What’s the best way for me to show even just a bit of my gratitude? Put 1 and 2 together and you’ve got… FOOD!
  4. So yeah, if I’ve ever made any of you some sort of food (which is a lot of you, after our recent Thanksgiving Potluck), know that I’m super thankful to each and every one of you for making JSA something that I absolutely love.

So with that all said and done, here’s to me continuing to contribute to JSA in my own—arguably weird—ways?! 😀

Since I bet a lot of you are tired of this wall of text by now, so I guess I’ll start wrapping this up. (THANK YOU IF YOU’RE STILL READING! T^T) Does this count as me cutting corners again? I’m getting lazy, even when writing a JSA blog entry. Hahaha.

But yes. I’ll definitely continue cutting corners if it means including more of myself and all the rest of you in JSA’s family circle.

Thanks for reading!

Whether or not you’re celebrating Thanksgiving, enjoy your holiday-weekend and rest well folks! I hope to see you guys at our future JSA events! ^_^

~Good night for now~

Hi everyone! VP Internal Priscilla here! Lately there have been a ton of posts about events, so I’ll write about something different altogether lol.

Something I take great pride in is the fact that I have really good memory, so I remember the very first time I meet a new person. So I think I’m gonna share my first encounters with the officers and staff of JSA! (be warned, this will probably get boring)

I first met En-chan when we were still freshman. This was when I was still fairly new to JSA and kind of shy, and En-chan’s English wasn’t as good as it is now. So when we were in the back of Shunpei-san’s car and Sena tried to introduce us, it wasn’t surprising that it was kind of awkward LOL. It’s okay though, now we’re close enough to take really unflattering photos together.

Kevin and Tomoki

I met these two when I went to Fall Bonfire in 2012, our very first event in JSA ever. My friend Christian met them first, and they told me they were from Kobe. I asked them if they could teach me how to call Christian fat, and Kevin told me it was デブ. It stuck until now, so thanks guys LOL.

I met Yuka for the first time when we were waiting at Café V to go to the San Diego Asian Film Festival. It was the first time she ever came out to a JSA event, I think, so it was nice to see another freshman at the time. I was really intimidated by her at first, I don’t know why. She’s really nice. Maybe she just has that face.

Fall 2012, GBM 2 with the Halloween theme. We were waiting outside of Warren Lecture Hall and Andy was outside fiddling with his phone when me and Christian waved hi to him. We didn’t even know him though, lol. Look at him being too cool and looking bored during GBM.

I don’t remember our first conversation, but I definitely remember seeing her for the first time at Fall Bonfire during freshman year. She looked super Japanese. And she was so cute and shy with her cheeks all rosy like they usually are!

This loser didn’t come out until 2nd year, but at least he came to the first event of the year! I met him for the first time when we were doing the ice breaker, and apparently both of our favorite color is blue. I also remember that same day he mentioned knowing something about Indonesia, which made him 10x more awesome in my book.

First thought: holy crap she is so pretty LOL. I remember meeting her for the first time at the Boba Run after our first GBM in Fall 2013, but we didn’t really start bonding until our Halloween event! Charlie Chaplin and French artist–mustache buddies!

This is embarrassing, I had to ask her name twice :O so much for having a good memory. But still, I remember being super surprised when we were talking in the back of Erik’s car and she told me she’s a math major (because I kind of hate math). It’s okay, we appear to have a lot of other things that brought us closer, including being Pristorian and Aristorian.

I remember meeting and talking to her after she had already become staff of JSA! One day she appeared during our weekly meetings and I remember being so surprised at how brave she was coming in so fast lol. I know I couldn’t have done that when I was a freshman!

(from GBM 1 boba run!)

I remember she was the first freshman I encountered at Bonfire and she was telling me how she was trying really hard to look for JSA at Library Walk earlier that week (which is surprising because I always thought we’re pretty obnoxious when we flyer). Like most people, I was also surprised when she spoke perfect Japanese, but she’s definitely one of the most interesting people I’ve met. So cultured!

I remember seeing Sici for the first time at Language Table during my freshman year, but the first time I really talked to her was during our Fall Staff Retreat. She was pretty quiet, but very sweet!

しょうママ!I remember my first conversation with him was during a boba run after GBM! But he also reminded me that one time I mistakenly put him in beginner Japanese at Language Table (it isn’t my fault if you don’t tell me what level you are lol) Getting to know him over the past year has been fun though. He’s such a smart and sensitive person! Did you know he writes poems? Cool huh?

I actually met Kenji before he came into JSA! He and I were in the same Japanese tutorial class, and I remember him being really good at speaking. It feels like such a long time ago!

I remember when he came to Language Table for the first time. He was so friendly and smiley, perfect for the JSA gang lol. I’ve always admired his motivation to learn Japanese too!

Anthony and Cuong

I first met Anthony through embarrassing stories other people told about him LOL. But yeah, he was a fun guy to go trick or treating with 😀 and I met Cuong when we went trick or treating! I haven’t had too many opportunities to talk to him, but I heard about his love for anime and his dream to go to Japan! I hope he reaches the $10,000 one day!

I remember him when he showed up to Hot Pot Night last year, speaking Japanese like a pro lol. I also remember that was when I found out he hates to be photographed lol. Try finding a picture of him on facebook, it’s impossible.

I remember seeing her for the first time at GBM 1 dinner this year! She was sitting at the table next to mine! I was amazed to find a 17 year old sophomore with junior standing *__* She’ll graduate when she should be going to college for the first time!

I actually remember her from tabling this fall! Such a cute and memorable face. She came by the table and was mostly talking to En-chan, but I was sitting behind my computer, getting excited at the idea of more freshmen coming in lol.

I remember meeting Stephanie at bonfire! I was talking to her and some other first years about their first week in San Diego! I also recently found out she has dimples and is from the 818 like me 😀 <3

JSA and everyone in it mean a lot to me. If I find someone who also loves JSA, then I’ll probably love them too. Even though I can easily remember my first encounters with these people, it’s my future with them that matters. So let’s enjoy our time together and make more of these memories! 😀

Stargazing: 11/22

こんにちは!This is new staff member, Stephanie Adachi. This is my first blog post, so please don’t be too hard on me hehe. Can you believe it’s almost week 8 already? Fall quarter is flying by and this week we had many events, finishing it off with Stargazing on Saturday night.

We first met at Café V at 7 to meet up with our respective drivers. Once everyone was grouped into their cars, we headed to our first stop, which was Starbucks. Since it was a chilly night by the beach, a nice, warm, holiday-themed drink was the perfect complement.

With warm drink in hand, we headed to Torrey Pines State Beach. We sat on beach towels and tarps and many people were bundled up in sweaters, blankets, hats, and scarves

when you see it…                                        かわいいぼうしね〜

hope everyone is staying warm!                                                       and having fun!

to protect against the cold. Some members downloaded star maps and other stargazing apps on their phones to help find constellations. People found Orion’s Belt right away but there was some controversy to where the Big Dipper was. Some people were very lucky and while stargazing saw shooting stars! (I was too slow and missed it both times lolol) When it started getting really chilly and the tide got higher, we snapped a group picture

and started heading back towards campus.

It was a really nice experience; I personally had never gone stargazing before and I realized how we often take something as beautiful as a night sky for granted. It was a really relaxing evening and also a good way to meet new people. Thank you to everyone who came out to the event and I hope you enjoyed the event as well! お疲れ様 to all of the leaders too! (Priscilla, Tomoki, Sam, Yusaku, Arisa, and Diana!)

The next event will be the Thanksgiving potluck next Wednesday (11/26). Please RSVP on Facebook!
