JSA Strawberry Picking 2012!

Hello all,

This is Mayuko, JSA’s Internal Vice President!

This past Saturday, we held our annual Strawberry Picking event. This is my second time attending this event, and I look forward to it every year. I grew up in Carlsbad where the Strawberry Fields are located, so it’s a pleasure for me to share a part of my hometown with JSA every year 🙂

Anyways, we left at around 1PM from Café Ventanas for the Strawberry Fields, and arrived at around 1:30PM. We all purchased our individual buckets (small, or large) and began strawberry picking!

alt

alt

Everyone had their own standards for what a Strawberry should be, so everyone’s buckets were full of different kinds of strawberries. Some people filled it up way to the top!

alt

Of course, like every year, a sort of war erupts between mostly officers of bombarding each other with either very ripe or very not-so-ripe strawberries. And before I knew it, strawberries were flying into the air. Of course, it’s no where near intense as it may sound, but this always provides a few good laughs during the event.

alt

alt

After about an hour and a half of strawberry picking, all the members headed over to the new Corner Bakery across from the outlet mall for a late lunch and early dinner.

alt

Overall, this event is a nice relaxing event that makes us forget our worries and allows us to enjoy life at a slower pace. I look forward to going again next year, and hope all our members had an enjoyable time!

Hello Everyone!

It feels like it’s been a LONG TIME since I wrote a blog post.

So, I’ll do a brief introduction.

My name’s Min and I’m currently (THAT’S RIGHT JEFF)

So…. a couple of Saturdays ago (yeah I should’ve really written this right after the event….),

JSA went to Long Beach to compete in the Southern California Undoukai 2012!

In case you don’t know what that is, or didn’t attend, Undoukai is where around 10 schools in the Southern California (+ Las Vegas O.o;;)

gather at the beach and compete in a variety of different sports events and the goal is to win(read: not get last place)

Since I had to go into work real quick in the morning, I ended up leaving a bit late, which worked out for Jimmy cause he overslept.

TOTALLY SAW THAT COMING.

Anyway, so the two of us left San Diego and I drove carefully, safely and as fast as the law allows, to Long Beach.

Unfortunately I didn’t make it in time for the beginning of Dodgeball, which was the only event I signed up and wanted to do.

So….. I took pictures instead.  Oh and I helped some people feel refreshed by carrying them all the way out to sea so they can have a quick dip in the ocean.

Even though I didn’t get to play, we actually won a game of dodgeball so YAY~~ XD

Here’s a picture from 8 people 9 legged race!

Here’s a picture from the O or X game we played!

and while some of us were working hard to not lose…. I mean win, the rest of us were working even harder on another project:

What are they doing you ask?  Well, this year we had a sandcastle competition, something that everyone can work on while not competing in events!

And we were working hard!!

Except…. we weren’t making a sandcastle……….

More on that later.  Because after lunch, it was time for our tradition of throwing people into the ocean!

Unfortunately, running around with a good sized DSLR and carrying people to the ocean does not mix and I couldn’t get any shots of

people actually being thrown into the ocean but I did get a few after shots!

If you can’t tell, Shunpei is feeling very refreshed after a swim in the ocean…….with all his clothes on.

After lunch and all the fun in the ocean was the obstacle relay race!

The obstacle race consists of running to the opposite side, where you need to do a task and then run back.

And here is our team!

After the obstacle relay race, was tug of war!

Even though we had “TUFF THUY” “MIGHTY MAYUKO” and “SUPER SENA” we still couldn’t get 1st place……..

I MEAN WELL DONE EVERYONE!! : D : D : D : D : D PLEASE DON’T HURT ME D:

The final event of the day was the relay race!!  Last year in this event, we went from bottom to 2nd place overall!  Thanks to Yu-chan!

The side effect was, he………collapsed and we had to call the ambulance. what a little girl GREAT GUY.

This year, we all had 911 on our speed dial and was ready to call at a moment’s notice but once again, Yu-chan disappointed us and didn’t collapse.

My camera also ran out of batteries during this event so I couldn’t get shots at the end but here’s a pic of Yu-chan running!

So at the end we ended up placing 4th overall which means we weren’t last! which is a very important thing.

You see, the school that comes in last place gets pied in the face!! D:

Oh, so the judges came by at the end and looked at the great hole we dug in the ground and deemed that the

GREAT TRENCH OF CHINA wasn’t an approved sandcastle and we lost.

But not to worry, we ended up burying Yutaka, and your truly, in the hole and filling the sand back up and Chief Justice Wang

decided it was a good idea to get the rest of the whipped cream and put it all over Yutaka and I……………………………..

which was followed by a screaming Min and Yutaka yelling at Chief Justice Wang and swearing to take revenge.

Still all good clean fun.

We went to this Korean restaurant for dinner and we came back home!  What a long day!!

I can’t believe it took me this long to write this…….sorry everyone!!  Next time I volunteer I will do it in a more timely fashion!

Until next time~!

Samurai Showdown 2012

alt

alt

Congratulations man 🙂

Halloween Event @ Downtown San Diego

Hi Everybody! I just came back home from JSA’s weekly officer/staff meeting 🙂 *if anyone of you are interested, come join us on Tuesday nights!!!*

Last weekend, JSA had its annual Halloween event in downtown San Diego at the Haunted Hotel on Market Street.

Out of JSA members we got a pirate, a failed cross-dresser, a wolf and a little red riding hood…etc etc etc…

My favorite was definitely our prez’s Waldo costume though, because everyone who passed by him said “Hey I found him!” :DD

I guess I scared a lot of people telling them that the walk through the Haunted Hotel was 25 minutes,

it definitely felt shorter because we were all scared and lined up like ducklings.

GJ front-of-the-line people! *shumps*

The scariest part was the guy with the chainsaw at the very end of the trail…

I’m still not sure if that was real or not..

All in all, it was a fun event that finished with Shumpei’s surprise 21st birthday party,

(gosh it was tough killing time at CVS @ la jolla) and I wanted to thank all of you guys who showed up for the event,

new members and old, people who gave rides to others, people who celebrated our vice’s birthday and cleaned up afterwards 🙂

OK Imma finish off with a picture. G’night!!!

First Annual(?) Mr. Children Night!

Mr.Children Home Tour -in the field-を観ました。

What Can I Do?

Hello,

I’ve been wondering where to post my thoughts before they overwhelm me, and decided that I would do it here, although I’m keeping it from posting to the home page for obvious reasons.

Today I spent most of the day watching the news, crying a few times.  I felt this heavy sensation in my chest, the crushing feeling of helplessness that I couldn’t shake off.  It’s a really terrible feeling, especially when you are so far away and there’s nothing you can do except pray for the best.

Since Friday 3/11, yesterday morning, the Japanese Student Association at UCSD worked to come up with a quake/tsunami relief plan to raise $10,000.  I have never seen such a fast and intense response and am extremely proud to be part of this organization.  Ideas flew back and forth and before long, we had set up a donation website, facebook event, TV/Radio interviews, and contacted several other organizations across campus and across the state.

In response, I am doing my best to support JSA’s relief plan as the Matsuri Head Coordinator.  With the help of our organization and the community, we hope that the JSA + NSU Matsuri Festival 2011 will be an event where people of the UCSD campus and San Diego community can not only attend to appreciate and enjoy Japanese culture, but can also help JSA’s relief efforts. While raising money is our main goal, we hope to also give people the opportunity to share their feelings of hope through other ways, which will be updated in the future.

Information will be updated on how you can help the cause.

I hope everyone’s summers were more productive than mine!

I feel as if a quick introduction is needed for the new JSA members. My name is Rina Konishi, a JSA staff member since spring quarter 2011. I’m a second year sixth college student (WOOO SIXTH) majoring in international studies-econ as of approximately two weeks ago.

Today I am writing about JSA’s annual fall bonfire! I had the distinct honor of being a leader for the event, which was a first for me. We had an absolutely astounding turnout this year with over 100 people coming to SEA us (get it?) at La Jolla shores.

fumi san and lovely ladies~

alt

first years, the future of JSA ! thanks for coming !

alt

i actually had the pleasure of meeting some of these members too 🙂 hehe

alt

and a photo of your JSA 2012-2013 officers/board members! (missing shunpei san)

alt

BTW aren’t these shirts amazing?! if you are interested in buying a shirt, one could be yours for only $10! Please talk to our Vice President Internal Mayuko Inoue ( minoue10@gmail.com) if you are interested in getting a shirt (or a membership card, which will give you discounts on great omnomnoms around campus and off campus in convoy and such).

Back to bonfire.

First everyone participated in “speed dating”, which is an icebreaker that allows people to meet many other people. I hope you were able to meet some new folks and learn more about them!

can you spot the happy faces xD (photo-bombing faces) ?

alt

everyone is engaged in intriguing conversation…

alt

Then we split up into the obstacle course relay race. First place winners were able to eat dinner first, which was hot dogs cooked by the bonfire. We also had a sスイカ割り (suika wari, watermelon breaking) game going on and I remember smelling the watermelon smell… スイカ▲_(*^∇^*) めしあがれ~♪ Lastly we ended with the traditional “throw the president into the ocean” but from my understanding, it didn’t seem to work as well as people expected.

Thank you all for coming, and if you didn’t come this time we also have another bonfire in Spring quarter to wrap up the end of an incredible academic year!

And yet another [rather hard to see] gif…

Good night and good luck,

Time for a Study Break

Hello~!

It’s me Stephaniee :] Tomorrow, or actually TODAY is GBM #4 (8PM in CENTR 113)! Time flies~ it’s already 9th week, and while I’m pulling an all nighter for a midterm (WHY?! D:), I decided to write a blog entry on the new website.

Elections are coming up for JSA and while I’m so happy to see so many officer and staff, nominating them for positions is so difficult! I wonder what will happen~~ Sorry to get a bit serious, but lately I’ve been thinking… what I want to know most from the newer officers and staff is what they think it means to be a leader. Just wondering…

Other than that, planning with Matsuri is hectic and stressful as ever, luckily I have an awesome group of people who are passionate and dedicated to our biggest event of the year.  But I’ll definitely be relieved to pass it on to someone else.  Oh yea, I just found out today that we can’t do Cafe Hue crepes T__T  saaad…  just like like godzilla up in the banner.

So like I said.. I’ve been ‘studying’, along with my friend~

0303110444

Isn’t he adorable!!! I love pookalooz right now~ they are so squishy <3 I wish JSA could make a Disneyland event, if only it wasn’t so expensive! :[ I’m also sad that there was no Glee episode last night but that is totally unrelated.

Anyways, I can’t really think of anything else to say.. or.. well actually I can but they are all very random so yea. See you tonight at GBM! If I am not passed out from lack of sleep or whatever. BYE~~~

-Steph
