想い出がいっぱい – Taiga Hosoi, EYP, and a Truly Remarkable Year

It’s me, Edward again and it’s come around the time that I owe JSA another blog post. I hope you guys are having a good summer so far; I myself am going on “vacation” in around a month, so I’m super stoked, though my enthusiasm is curbed a little bit by the looming presence of Summer school. Oh well.

Soo… starting on a somewhat depressing note, Taiga Hosoi returned to Japan this week, as I’m sure a lot of you already know. We met playing Super Smash Bros and parted playing Super Smash Bros; never in my life have I met somebody so much better at that game than other people (in this regard, I am kind of glad he left). But apart from that, he’s helped me so much putting together our S I N G E R B O Y S performance, smoothing out transitions, keeping tempo, getting everybody obsessed with beat-boxing, that I’m willing to forgive him for that one time he decided to take a nap and MISS PRACTICE. Hanging out with him has been so cool, whether it was Little Sheep Hot Pot or Karaoke, he always kept things interesting. I admit this last week has felt a little more somber knowing that he’s gone. Gonna miss you, Taiga Hosoi and I’m pretty sure I won’t be the only one. If you didn’t get to talk to him during his stay, then TOO BAD; HE’S GONE AND WILL (PROBABLY) NEVER COME BACK.

EYP definitely felt like a success this year (any issues and complaints can be addressed to noreply@gmail.com). I don’t know how it kicked off because I was too busy TAKING A GODDAMN FINAL, but rushed there as fast as I could. thought the food was great, though I could see how meat-only could have been disappointing to some (actually I can’t see how at all). The ambiance felt incredibly classy and matched how everybody was dressed. To you who came, I’m incredibly lucky to be surrounded by such good-looking folks 😉 😉 ;). Of course the highlight of that evening for me (and I hope some other people) was of course performances. I didn’t get to voice a lot of my thoughts about them at the time, so here’s my chance.

To Yusaku, Kevin, and Andy: that was colorful.

To Jsync: gosh that tarp was a really nice touch. My only regret was that I didn’t get to see it from the audience’s perspective.

To Ken and Thao: well you got me; I almost certainly wasn’t going to guess that song. You guys definitely started off the dances explosively, so kuh wuh iiiiiiiiiiiiiii.

To Stephanie and Arisa: hot damn, you guys definitely increased the temperature in the room by a couple of degrees. I’ve never seen anything like this before.

To Nimish and Anish: hey I was glad to hold your drum. Woo hoo. I’m just kidding, guys. Holy shit, you can move though. Pretty sure that would’ve sapped all my energy within the first 30 seconds.

And… I got to perform too, with my very own S I N G E R B O Y S. It’s been a good run, boys; preparing for this gig has been something that I’d been looking forward to every single week. The saddest thing is that most of the group is graduating, but fear not. This is not the end. If you love music and have a knack for anything music-related, then I suggest you join our group, because next year, we’re aiming for the big stage.

And well, that’s the end of my 3rd year at UCSD. Truly, it has been my best year so far. I am so glad I joined a club. Never could I ever imagine that I would be looking back at a year so fondly. I had a bit of trouble starting off, but man am I so glad I stuck with it. Thank you everyone for having me :). Signing off.

学年最後のLanguage Table

GBM 3

Why, hello there. Thanks for stopping by. My name’s Nimish. I’m JSA’s Event Coordinator; I’m the guy that reserves restaurants and sets up rides. I’m also JSA’s resident brown guy. I used to bite people but I think I’ve finally gotten that under control so please, don’t hesitate (too much) to come up to me at an event and say hi! I don’t bite, not anymore.

Anyway, this past Wednesday, we had our last GBM of the 2014-2015 school year! I was one of the leaders, along with Thao, Tomo-kun, James, and Henry.

Two of our ikemen leaders.

We decided on a summer theme for this event, and planned most of our activities with that motif in mind.

This guy didn’t really like our choice of theme.

Our icebreaker game was Never Have I Ever! Basically, everyone took turns saying things that they have “never ever done” and if someone else in the group had done that thing, they put one of their fingers down. The last person standing was the winner. Competition was fierce.

The yung bubbadumpz sizes up his opponents.

Friendships were broken, enemies were made.

“What’s that? I can’t hear you over the sound of ME WINNING THIS GAME.”

After our wonderfully heated icebreaker (it actually wasn’t really that heated), we were treated to a wonderful, edifying presentation of Japanese summer cultural activities by the esteemed Tomo-kun and the lovely Thao-chan! It was very legit. We learned that the Japanese equivalent of “pinata breaking” is “suika wari” or “watermelon breaking.

I am not making that up.

We also learned about some of Japan’s traditional natsu matsuri, “summer festivals.” Apparently Japan has firework competitions in summer! That sounds pretty awesome.

Thao’s slide design was lovely.

All in attendance were positively enraptured.

One such enraptured attendee.

We then proceeded to play our main game, appropriately and concisely titled “Game.”

I really am not making this stuff up.

As you can see above, the object of the game was to think up songs whose lyrics contained the words “summer,” “sea,” or “sun” (or their Japanese translations). The catch was that each participant had to sing the part of the song that contained one of the target words! Thank goodness we have some very good singers in JSA.

Here we see a GBM-goer entranced by someone’s dulcet tones.

This game, “Game!” was actually quite a bit harder than its simple, carefree title indicated, and confusion and consternation abounded.

“You’re telling me Jingle Bells isn’t a summer song!? “In Da Club” isn’t either!? I’ve been lied to all my life!”

Alas, before we knew it, GBM was over and we all gathered for one final picture.

Pictured: Tomo “I’m really surprised” Komuro, Alex “A-Yeezy” Yoshiba, and Tommy “Bond” Yau.

But for those who had signed up ahead of time, there was yet fun to be had! We all headed out to Hinotez in Convoy to enjoy some super oishii Japanese food. Some used the outing as a chance to do some deep thinking.

“Should I dye my hair purple?”

“Purple isn’t really my color, though. How about red? Blue? This is hard.”

I personally took this as a chance to practice my Kuchiyose no Jutsu.

“Do I really have to draw blood? That seems like it would hurt.”

All jokes aside, the food was excellent, and everyone had an equally excellent time. Here we are pictured again, right outside the restaurant.

We’re very good at taking serious pictures.

All in all, Spring 2015 GBM 3 was a great success, and I thank all who came out for doing so! If you couldn’t make it out last week, I look forward to seeing you at one of our remaining events this quarter!

Until next time,

Nimish “Brown Guy” Pratha

P.S.: Mouse over the pictures (if you haven’t already) for more lame jokes!

Photoshoot!

Hi everyone! This is Stephanie again and this will be my first blog post as your new historian! For the next year, I will be documenting all of our JSA events by taking pictures, so if you ever see me with my camera, don’t be afraid to come up and say hi! And what a fitting blog post for historian because this past weekend was our Photoshoot event! Similar to last year’s photo shoot, we went to Balboa Park to take group photos and single shots. However, this year we did something a little different and instead of staying in one location we took photos in different areas of Balboa Park. Having only been to Balboa Park once, this was a really fun way of exploring the beautiful park as well as taking fun pictures!

Our first location was the well where we took the Officer group photo and single shots!

Then we went to the botanical gardens to explore and take cute/funny photos!

This was a really fun event where we all got dressed up in our theme of red and white and got to tour Balboa Park in the beautiful weather! I hope everyone who came out had a great time and お疲れ様 to my fellow leaders: Arisa, Jin, Seira and Nayuki! Also, please come out to our next events this week: Temaki Night (if you signed up on the Gdoc) on 5/20 and Multicultural Night on 5/27!

Midterm Week

Hi, everybody, it’s Edward and though this post is long overdue, I figured now was a better time than ever to finally write it (I lied. I was stumped and Won told me to write about midterm week, so here it is lol). So yeah, Midterm Week. I know a lot of you were stressed out and to you I say “Ha!” because unlike you, I was not stressed out because I had no midterms.

So while you were studying I was helping plan GBM 2, a first time for me. I’ve got to admit, being a newbie to this whole lead thing, I wasn’t exactly sure if things would pan out well. Having spoken to a few people afterwards, I was exceptionally glad to hear that the overall reception was warm. To any non-staff reading this (fat chance, amirite) then I urge you to go outside of your comfort zone and try joining the team; your input could be just what we need.

Anyway, after that there was Strawberry Picking, an event that I had the honor not to go to because, well, actually, I don’t really remember why I didn’t go. It probably had to do with it being very early and me not being very good with mornings. So, to the people who went, hope you had fun and if you didn’t go, shame on you. We put a lot of effort into our events; who do you think you are, not coming? Screw midterms and studying, tests are so easy you should just know everything on it already.

All joking aside, I had a very good weekend last week. This had very much to do with the sheer progress that my singing group has been making. We don’t get to practice that often, so with what we’ve managed to do so far, I’m honestly proud. Here’s to you, boys. One day we’re gonna be on the big stage.

Well that’s that. Until next time and if you actually read this post to here, then wow. Don’t you have something better to do with your time?

GBM 1!
